Hey guys. Did we all watch Top Gear on Sunday night? I thought that part of the show where they played 5-aside footy with that cool wee new car the Aygo was fantastic!
But heres a question for you. They said that this new car will actually be getting launched 3 times as:
Toyota Aygo
Peugeot 107 (spiritual succesor to the 106 I guess)
Citroen C1 (spiritual succesor to the wee AX... not the neddy SAXO!!! The C2 plays that role)
Insurabce grp 1 for all, and a 1 litre VVTi engine (from Toyota), and a CD player that you can plug you iPod into 8) . Sounds pretty cool. But which badge would you have?
Me personally, it would probably have to be the Peugeot... I liked the 106, I hate the Citroen badge, and Toyota, despite being very good, are generally boring.
Which one would you have :?:

P.S. of course, none of them are as good as the Ford Ka, obviously :D

well toyota isnt made in france which lets face it is a crap country!!!
ford_fanatic
24th May 2005, 07:29 PM
None of these cars are made in France though....or Japan!!!
Czech Republic I think they are all made... then Citroen, Peugeot and Toyota just stick their own badges on them. Its really a matter of choosing which badge you like best without having to worry too much about cost, reliability or quality!
If ten of us were to buy them, we could go have a game of 5 aside with them 8)

Its unfortunate that i dont like any of them! I look at them and think Daewoo Matiz - sorry 'Chevrolet'
That said, probably fine for 100% city driving.
But 7 grand buys you a hell of a good used car!

But 7 grand buys you a hell of a good used car!
It certainly does!
That advert for the Kia Picante really annoys me - who the hell is gonna spend that much money of that when you could have a 6 month old, higher spec fiesta or clio for the same money

If that figrue of 7 grand is right that would buy you a very nice, very modified second hand RX7, or almost any smallish family car on the planet 8)
What is the deal with the chevy invasion anyway? There everywhere thesedays and almost all of them are Daewoos with the wrong badge

Thus leaving you another £4000 to buy a lifetimes supply of Le coq Sportif shell suits, some fake burberry scarfs and a few Nike baseball caps.
Your right too Stu, £7000 could buy you a really nice x-plate Golf GTi 2.0litre for example. Could also get an x or y-plate BMW compact 318 Ti. Could also get yourself a 2 year old Ford Mondeo or even a 1 year old Ford Focus. When you think about it like that, it does make you wonder the point!
As for Chevrolet buying Daewoo, I suspect Chevy wanted us to luagh at them more than we already do. Crappy American cars, now backed up with a smaller set of Malaysian rubbish :P

The C6 still has leafsprings for gawds sake!
Does it? I thought Citroens were famous for hydro pneumatic suspension. Maybe they are cost cutting.
Oh you cant get a 911 for 7 grand. If you can it will need a 10 grand engine or maybe an old cvh bolted in instead.
You could have a 928 though.

Now there was an engine 8) Only problem was it didn't have any piston liners in it  So when the bores were worn that was it das-kaput  new cylinder block required :(

The worrying thing is, so do a LOT of American cars!
All those American SUV's are all leaf spring at the back I think you'll find (The Ford and Chevy ones are anyways). Its ironic that the Americans use to laugh at some of our cars in the past really :P . I'll say this though, A Rover 75 would mop the floor with most of their hunks of junk.

i think you will find that almost all 4x4 are leaf spring (the descent ones anyway) so that arguement doesnt work stuart
Grant Barclay
26th May 2005, 09:20 PM
all new land rovers don't (decent 4x4s) the defender has coil springs, the new disco has coil and air on the hight spec models, the range rover has air, and the freelander uses torsion bar.
leaf isn't used any more because the other system offer better ride comfort and better axle articualtion.

and the freelander uses torsion bar
I think you'll find that torsion bar suspension is just as old as leaf springs  It was on my very first car (Morris 1000) and that was light years ago    It was also on the infamous Morris Marina in the 70's. Leaf springs will usually be found on any vehicle that uses a live axle. Most modern cars all have independant suspension all round which usually means some form of MacFerson strut type arrangement.

thank you gordon and yet again age wins over youth
damn
Grant Barclay
27th May 2005, 08:55 AM
but simon stated the mordern decent 4x4s use leaf spring not that the use old types of suspension. i know torsion bar is old technology but thats what f1s currently use. the only new land rover with a solid beam axle is the defender and it has coil.
big si
27th May 2005, 09:05 AM
how new are we talking here grant because if you want to look at the first disco it had leaf springs it was what all 4x4 vehicles used 10-15 years ago unless you asked for coil spings as an option
and as for f1 cars on torsion bars i think you will find its a strut system they use just like all motorsport a coilover
thanks to this we are now using coilovers in our rc cars
wonderfull :!:

if we all want to be realy sad how about this
what suspention systems are avaliable
hydro elastic
dry suspention (rubber donught type)
mcpherson
leaf
hydraulic
torsion bar
i think thats about it
and remember guys we set the 4x4 bench mark with land/range rover
and the americans followed suit we made the worlds greatest 4x4 whic was built originaly with LEAF SUSPENTION  so there must be some good points in there somewhere
Maxxed_Ross
27th May 2005, 10:48 AM
You forgot about pnumatic too - similar applications as hydraulic but gives a far smoother ride as air is compressable, liquid is not 8) Oh and air's free :D

Range Rovers are amongst some of the Finest 4x4's on the road 8) . The fact they have evolved from using med-evil technology on their cars proves this :P I'm not a massive fan of 4x4 cars as I have stated before, BUT if I were going to buy a 4x4 in the future, I wouldn't even give other 4x4's a second thought. It would be a Land Rover every time.
As for the suspension:
It was also on the infamous Morris Marina in the 70's
Was the Morris Marina not one of the WORST British cars ever made? Infact I seem to recall it was suppose to be one of the worst cars in the world ever. It and the Austin Allegro :? (and the Nissan Sunny)
"...The Marina was made to compete with the Allegro...But why compete at all, I mean the Allegro and the marina were made by the same car company, British Leyland. WHY compete with yourself???... Of course the Allegro was designed to be sheak and european and compete with european cars. So what was the Marina to compete with Then? Walking, the bus?"
Not word for word, but a good bit of words from good old Jeremy C.

My dad used to try and sell Marina's, Maxi's, Allegro's and the like when I was a lad, which come to think of it explains a lot  Strange as it may seem but at the time they weren't tooooo bad. Remember they were competing with the likes of Hilman Avengers  These cars were all some of the first hatchbacks as we now like to call them  The TC Marina had the 1800 'B' series engine out of the MGB and it went like stink (relitive to the 70's that is  ) but the handling was out of this world for all the wrong reasons  Torsion bar front suspension, lever arm shocks on leaf springs at the back - yuck :( Aggggggggggghhhh the good old days   :D 8)

The Marina was made to compete with the Allegro...But why compete at all, I mean the Allegro and the marina were made by the same car company, British Leyland. WHY compete with yourself
I think it was more to do with good old choice. The Marina was rear wheel drive, which at that time most cars were apart from the good old mini (yes the original Si  ) The Allegro was one of a new breed of larger front wheel drive cars becoming available and as we now have now taken over as the main form of driving the wheels.
Here's a mind numbing fact for you  The Austin Princess, at the time in the late 60's, was the first front wheel drive car to be powered by a straight six engine of 2200cc
I'll just sits back in rocking chair with my pipe and slippers shall I   8)

I dont know many cars that have torsion bar suspension. The porsche 924 has it at the rear and this is for packaging reasons. It means there is no strut coming up into the wheel arch and concequently robbing boot space. I guess a long rod leaves more usable space round about it than anything else such as a coiled spring.

27th May 2005, 03:34 PM
306 had torsion bars - thats about all I can think of for now.
