View Full Version : Belt vs Shaft

RRCi have done a good report in this months Mag,
It is to do with Belt vs Shaft which is better?
The conclusion reads : "Our test pretty much proved that in a straight line at least with a high power motor a Belt driven Touring Car will indeed be better than a shaft drive car, but it's not beacause the drive-train is any more efficient, it's just less susceptible to Torque Reaction. With a stock motor a Shaft driven car will be quicker because it is simply more efficient and lighter - proved. But as we all know it really isn't that simple! No matter how good your drivetrain is, or how powerful your batteries or motor are, there is one overriding factor - TALENT - without that you will never be a winner. But a great drivetrain will always help!
Could this be the end to the age-old argument?????

Not really.Take Surikarn for example a great driving talent but has never performed well with a shaft drive car.All his best results have been with a belt drive car.World champion 2002,Thailand international champ 2002,2003,2004.Reedy Race winner 2004 and nothing with the shaft drive car.I'm not saying ones better than the other but in the hands of a capable driver he seems to do better with the belt drive.
Remember people this is just my own opinion.

i can see what scotts saying but i may not be the drivetrains that benifits him in some way, i could be because the layout of the car is different, etc.
but i agree with simon, its an old argument that has no real affect on racing. i have read that shaft is only better in one way. it is more efficient under now load, but that really makes no difference on the track because that never really happens.
one thing i have noticed though is people with belt driven cars very often carry spare belts, but i myself haven't seen anyone with a shaft driven car carry spare shafts :?:

I have to disagree, debates such as this go back and forward forever.
Take front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive, take Ford vs GM, whatever, they can just keep going and changing over time.
So, I have experimented this past year with TC4 and X Ray FK.
I managed to win 1 leg of the Western Canadian champs with each car, so for me both are great !
My main plus point in shaft drive cars is that they are just easier to work on

Yeah i too tead the review and thought they did a great job on it, but I'm still convinced that belt drive has alot more drag having driven a good few of both types. But in the end it's down to personal preference. I use a shaft on wood and a belt for carpet/outdoor - simply because I find that's what works for me 8)
Can we let this one die in peace now please :P
