View Full Version : Racing in the Shetlands?

Recently we've welcomed Colwyn Goodlad to the racing scene down this neck of the woods, and it's been good to see him.
On the way home from Carlisle on Sunday, Dad told me that there had been a mention of a meeting being run out on the Shetland Islands, just wondered if there was going to be anything happening about this?
Granted, I doubt it will be this year, due to weather and the like, but get it organised soon! I'm quite confident that a lot of people would travel out to such a 'peculiar' shall we say meeting, I know we're certainly up for it.
Cheers

I think you'll find the ferry prices will be the 'killer' for an event like this unless the organisers can negotiate a HUGE ferry discount :-(

Is there not like, a way of doing it cheap, if we know the dates well in advance?
Same as with the planes? I've heard of people flying to london for 16p and things like that, because they've booked early.

We should certainly look into this; I take it it's indoor carpet racing?
Is flying to the isles an alternative? I wonder if there'd be a problem with the weight restrictions for small planes like the ones they use to fly to the isles.
Driving and ferry could be a monster journey for some.
I'll check and see what I can find.

I spoke to collwyn about a Shetland GP and he said that they did run one just before he MMUK GP I think.
Would be good to go up there but I think it might be about £500 for 2 people!
Flights If we were doing it over the First weekend in June would be
Glasgow to Sumburgh
Thursday 29 MAy - £66 per person
Monday 2 June - £126 per person

With the amount of stuff some of us take we would need to charter a Jumbo;-)

The flights may be cheep (or nothing in some cases) but you can't get out of the airport taxes (return flight to Heathrow taxes are £56 on ther own)

I spoke to Colwyn about this on the way home on Sunday, they would be more than pleased if we all turned up for a weekend's racing. he is going to ask about some grants to see if we could all get discounts on travel.
When he traveled down for the Much More G.P his local council paid half the costs of the ferries. So fingers crossed we might get a trip to Shetland next year. But be warned, make sure your tent/gazebo is well pegged down or it will most likely end up in Norway!!
He will be traveling home today so i'm sure panic will set in when he reads this thread and discovers that we are serious and all gonna invade next year given half a chance!!
by the way he was most impressed by the welcome he got from all the main land Scottish Racers and had a great time at Stonehaven SCRA round, Falkirk Club night and the 3rd round of the Carlisle cup.
Many Regards

I had been expecting a reply from you Mark, good to hear he's interested, there was talk of it being a 2 day meeting? One day indoors, the next indoors?
Sounds good to me, dad and I were talking about going up with Mum and Allan, and making a week of it maybe.
Oh and Mark, I'll do you that speedo for £20? That's including me having a rake around to see if I can find my instructions from way back when, PM me and save cluttering the thread.
