My clio was probably the best car I've had or heard about, bar the bullet proof Honda.

I had a 172 a few years ago. I had it for 6 months, and I dont think I ever took it out without something breaking on it. I went from a Civic VTi to the 172, then a Type R. So maybe I was just a bit spoiled because of the Hondas I had owned.

It was a 172 that I had and then a facelift Type R - only one issue with the clio with the alarm but nothing with the Civic.

I really like the latest incarnation of the Civic, and really looking forward to the new Type R which looks absolutely stunning!

I'm pretty disappointed with the new Civic, in much the same way as I was with the last incarnation. I owned a 1990 H reg Vtec Civic (one of the first) with 100bhp per litre. This is now 2006 and they ahve yet to progress.

On road performance, my original civic was a good bit quicker than a Type R as well, although it wasn't exactly standard

That could have something to do with the increase in the cars wieght due to safety equipment...to stop you dying in a crash.

However you do have a point. The latest 1.4 litre engine for example now has only 82bhp (I think), whilst the older shape from the early 90's was able to produce 90bhp+

But I really really like the "star trek shuttle craft" looks of the latest civic. It certainly looks better than civics of yore....outside and inside!

As for your 1990 H-plate, I have to admit I thought they were really decent wee motors to look at. Solid as a rock too.

Yeh the on road performance has a lot to do with weight, but the power doesnt. They have been producing the S2000 for 10 years with a 2.0 litre 240bhp engine, the JDM market have a 220bhp Civic Type R, and the DC5 integra.

I just think they need to push the boundaries a lot more.
I agree that it looks excellent though.

I test drove the new civic, thought it was a bit too 'space-age' which put me off. I like to feel like I am driving a car.......

All personal opinions though, each to their own and all that!

The s2000 is a rear wheel drive car though. I'm sure Honda could easily go ahead and do the same with the Civic Type R, but with only front wheel drive, it might upset the front tyres too much, as Vauxhall have shown twice over now with the Astra VXR and Vectra VXR. On Top Gear, the Astra, despite having 240bhp, was beaten round the track by the Type R I'm sure, and Vectra was beaten by the equivalent Mondeo (220bhp also).

Its all well and due having loads of power, but no use what so ever if the car can't put that power down on the road properly. It is said that 220bhp generally is the limit for what you can put through the front wheel. 250bhp at a pinch, but as we can see from the result sof these Vauxhallas not alwasy a good idea.

The Americans however have never heard of this rull :-p

If however Honda were to adopt the Subaru or Mitsubishi recipe and use 4 wheel drive in the Type R, I'm sure we could then get some interesting results ;-) ... and a lot more than 240bhp.

The Mitsubishi Evo (correct me if I'm wrong here Ballsie) can produce 400bhp in the top guise model from a 2.0 litre engine, but bare in mind this is done by an ENORMOUS turbo charger. Whats more is, when driving this car normally (i.e. changing gear when your suppose to etc) it will perform no better than a regular 100bhp hatchback due to the enormous turbo lag. Not a problem though if you don't change gear when your suppose to and keep the revs high ;-)

What was the steering like? Was it really light weight?

I detest light weight steering on cars. I drove a Toyota Avensis a while ago as a hired car. Was actually a very nice car mostly, with exception to a rather crappy engine note :-P. The worst thing about this car was the steering. It was finger tip light and both me and the other guy sharing the driving thought it was WAY to spongy at speeds over 70mph.

I know that the Focus ST has a steering weight adjustment on it. A really bizarre offering from Ford I must say, and a pointless one too. Its so obvious which setting your gonna put it at...the heaviest 8-)

Nearly,

Mine produces 400 approximately from the standard turbo, remapped to run 1.6 bar of boost. You are right those, there is a load of lag before the turbo spools up.

When I did in my clutch I was getting shown up at the lights by 1.2's :)

I just bought a new Octavia VRS in race blue, it handles really nicely - very balanced and is really quick through the gears.....probably not as quick as Ballsie's motor though! I love the interior too!

The 75bhp 1.4 litre CVH engine in the Orion would do 100mph, within a reasonable distance, even with 4 passengers, AND would only be revving away at a mere 4000rpm. But boy was it loud inside :-p

Ear deffenders would have been a nice optional accessory

I got 110mph out my 1.4 litre Fiesta, with the engine spinning at 5000rpm. Beleive it or not the car was amazing stable. Certainly more stable than a certain 1.6 litre, 206 was doing only 100mph. I've been in a Corsa doing 90mph before - that was fast enough for my liking - it felt kinda scary at that speed!!!
