Some of the most awful or pointless engines:

First up, the truly awful 1.8 litre Ford (turbo) Diesel engine as found in the old style Fiesta and Mondeo, and the Escort. Noisy, slow, and not that economical.

Next up, the totally pointless 1.6 litre 8 valve E-Drive engine from Vauxhall as found in the mk3 and mk4 Astra. Why would you buy an Astra with one of these engines when you can have a 1.4 litre 16valve engine which is not only more powerful and faster, but also cheaper on fuel and cheaper to tax.

Ah a BMW engine! The 1.6 litre petrol engine from the 1 series. Why is this refined, smooth engine in here? Simple, when you buya BMW 1 series, you are essentially buying a classy Ford Focus sized car, with the handling Finesse of rear wheel drive. For the money your paying and the fact that the car is "special" in this class, ideally you want it go special. This 1.6litre petrol engine takes a snail like 11+ seconds to reach 60, meaning your average Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra, or even Peugeot 307 (provided it doesn't brake on accelerating to 60mph) will be just as fast, if not faster! Buy the 120 model (preferrably the 130 ;)) instead.

Lastly, the most evil engine of them all! The electric motor hooked up to several rows of lead acid batteries. Held in a load of daft looking cars over the years including the General Motors EV1. Also found in the poor wee malested Peugeot 106 Electric Car. Its Evil I tell you! EVIL!!!

The second Ford I have put in the awful section if you will recall. I also placed the Ford Fusion in one of these posts in the past.

Si, as for the for the that Ford Diesel engine, I admit I didn't know Ford still used it. In a van, I think its completely acceptable...one does not expect the same refinement from a van as they do from a car. But in a car this engine was fairly behind the times. The Mk4 Fiesta took an agonising 18 seconds to reach 60 with the non turbo version of that engine - imagine how slow the Escort and the Escort van must have been therefore without the turbo. As for the Turbo model, which develops a modest 90bhp (88 bhp actually if we are gonna be accurate), it was a bit quicker (although still slower than rival diesel engines of its day). It was noisy, unrefined, and the power use to come in one large lump on the rev range. I suppose 47mpg is alright for a van - but i would expect better from a small car with a disel engines these days (55mpg is suppose to be easily possible from small diesel engined cars). I guess its not the worst engine of all time, but no-way would i want to own a Mondeo mk1 or mk2 with that engine in it!

Ballsie - what can I say, I get bored at lunch times :)

I can get 55mpg from the Ibiza, without trying to hard. 60mpg can be had, and I've never head it drop below 40, no matter how hard I try :-D

Does the Ibiza have the 1.9TDi VAG engine in it, from the new Golf GT?

It has the 1.9 VAG in it, but I think the newest golf has the 2.0 incarnation of the engine.

In standard form, the 1.9 produces the most power in the Seat, compared to all the other cars it is in, and when remapped, its good for 190bhp and 330lb/ft torque.

Only downsides are service costs, and you cant run it on cooking oil.

lol - shame :)

330lb/ft is superb - I see what you mean about more torque than a lot of Evo's!

Have you seen the Thurlby 888 Astra CDTi - that looks equally impressive.

Yeh I've seen it. Its unbelievable. Diesel is definitely the future, unless the rpices keep going up at the pumps.

WRONG - Hydrogen will be the Future :p

Sorry - for all the pedants out there, Diesel is the near future i.e. from now til the next 20 years, and after that then I'm sure there will be a few solutions to the problem.

Hydrogen - IMO will not be one of them.
