Its been a while since anything has been posted in this section and now setup has become so important at the club I thought that we could use this section to help anyone that needs any help or tips.

I will try my best to answer any questions people have and if I dont have the answers then Im sure guys like Niall or John will be happy to help.

What is the best way to build shocks without getting air in them and so they all rebound the same?

Diagrams/photos would also be appreciated.

I dont know if this is what you need, but since my absence due to the ol leg, did more surfing than usual on the web and found this tip for getting no air in your shocks.

When filling them, fill to the brim, (uncompressed, piston at bottom of cylinder), slowly compress and hold in that position to allow the air bubbles to rise out from the bottom to the top and dissappear, then while still compressed screw the cap down till tight.

Then release the compression, or fit the spring and collet; all shocks done this way should be equal, providing the springs and oil are.

For very fine final tuning there is a tool made by Team Losi, called would you believe it The Shock Matching Tool.

It will balance a pair of shocks by matching compression and rebound between them, by the shocks screw adjusters and if nescessary the springs due to minor differences in actual manufacturing tolerance spring rates.

I have one, got mine from Leisuretime Falkirk, but have seen them on the web from others, if you can not get one in time let me know and I will get to the club somehow and bring it with me for use by those interested.

Hope this is of some help

Callum - The Sphere esc would be better used for mod and the SPX for Pro Stock.
Although the SPX has mod profiles and can be used with motors down to a 5.5 so it should be fine as long as your dad fits the heatsink.

Smally - The best way to get air out the shocks is to buy a shock stand and once you have filled them with oil, pump the piston a few times to get the air to the top of the shock and let it rest of a few mins in the stand. I will show you the next time you are at the club how to set the rebound the same on each shock.

Callum, Kenny is right about the speedo. It would be good to have a spare! I wouldn't go changing the speedo for the mod day unless you have a problem with your SPX, i doubt there will be any noticeable performance gain

Shocks are often difficult things to setup and vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. I've personally never used any shock tools, it's important also that your shocks are all the exact same length. Measure this from the centre of the ball cup rather than top and bottom so as not to get a false reading due to wear on the ends.

Like Kenny says, it's a thing you just need to get a feel for, and get to know your own shocks. I find the best way is to have a shock stand, fill all 4 shocks at the same time and then go and do something else to the car, if ever building a kit I build the shocks first then assemble the rest of the car so that the shocks and oil have plenty time to settle. When it comes to putting on the bladder, place it on one side, and roll it across the top of the shock body. This will let some excess oil spill over. Setting the rebound is tricky. Usually this involves unscrewing the cap and pumping the piston in and out a number of times then tightening the cap but it can be a bit hit or miss and on occasions you'll have to rebuild shocks again to get them the same.
