after efra and as far as im aware brca mod classes will be 5 cell this year but can i ask where do we and the srca stand on this? will scotland stay 6 cell or will we be going 5 cell
answers please

Why oh why did the major governing bodies have to complicate things.....it was so simple when everything was 6 cell.......what's next? Only run half a bodyshell or no inserts in your tires??!
This is giving me a headache.

why are they changing to 5 cells? I can't see the point really, other than the fact they probably won't fit in the car right any more!

what's the problem with 6 cell ??

thats the point of this thread.

6 cells, with the new breed of cells have too much power for the 30 year motor technology that everyone is running so winds are desoldering due to the heat issues.
No real problem with 6 cell as such. Its up to the racers if they want to run a 6turn motor and just squeeze an extra couple of pinions on. Everyone knows how to make their motor last 5 minutes. Its up to them, as an individual, to choose to do so.

ok cheerz lol i understand it now...but if people who had 30 year old motors and raced with them...why can't they get a new motor ?? lol solve the problem instead of everyone else needing to change they're settings

I dont mean they have 30 year old motors
I mean the current breed of motors (other than brushless) were designed about 30 year ago and have never been revised/updated/improved. So when they were originally designed they didnt have to cope with the power that we now have available from the current cells.
The only problem with running less cells at SRCA events is that you still need to meet the 1500g weight limit and not the revised 1350g weight limit.

i have dont this once in all my years of racing and im never short on pace.

i take it them the srca wont be running the 5 cell rule then?

Well, this all depends how you wish to interpret the SRCA rules. At the SRCA AGM, we voted to keep the classes the same as last year. Last years rules state that it follows the BRCA rules with a few exceptions. So you could interpret that to allow you to run 5 cell mod as per the BRCA, unless this years SRCA rules actually state which classes are to be run.

this has to be one of the most stupid rules I've ever heard of
So everyone has to change incase your motor melts? Insane! Don't drive so hard, use a different pinion.... use smaller batteries!
This is all getting too silly these days :bored:

oh i have seen it happen but if your melting solder your asking too much from the tools you have.
TBH this is no good reason for redicing the number of cells

not at all if the rules say 5 cell then we must run 5 cell there is no interpritation in this at all it either says 5 or 6 cells

I agree with you. Its easy to stop your motor melting, but there are loads of folk who argue that you should always be pushing the boundaries and driving right on the edge of your equipment. And I guess in most other forms of motorsport, that is the case so why shouldnt we. The big problem I can see, is that we never had any need to reduce cells or limit power. All we had to do was fix the part thats broken (The motor). There are plenty of new developments in motor technology but people are scared of change so no 1 ever proposes to allow them.

Yeh Simon, but the rule we voted for was 'To retain the same classes as last year'.
Last years rules state that the classes would follow the BRCA, but there was a few exceptions to the BRCA rules (tyre warmers etc). So IMO we have voted to follow the BRCA rules this year, excpet where clearly told different. And you can then run 5 cell 1350g if you wish.
But I do know that other people have assumed, that because we voted to follow last years classes, that we will only be allowed 6 cell 1500g.

i wonder if we can get alex to comment on this one as it appears to be a bit of a grey area. wouldnt you agree?
from what i read on another forum and brca AGM proposals 5 cell has been brought in due to the vastly increasing speed of the cars. i feel its a brca thing from a liability point of view.

It is a grey area, but it might be better not to get alex to comment and leave it grey. Then it leaves the option
The BRCA never planned to go to 5 cell. It came about because EFRA decided it was the best way forward. But they are definitley trying to slow the cars down. Although a 5 cell 1350g car will be a good bit quicker than a 6 cell 1500g car.

if it is to slow the cars down it won't be long before there's something else on the market to make them quicker again.
As for liability... isn't that why we pay BRCA membership so we are covered in the very unlikely event of hurting someone seriously? I've been racing nearly 10 years and I've never seen a fatality yet!

As I recollect from the AGM the decision made on this issue was status quo i.e. to run to the same rules as 06 i.e. 6 cell mod and 19t classes both with a 1500 gram min weight (inc timing gear), no Lipo cells, that is certainly what I voted for so no ' interpretation ' or ' grey area ' issues there in my mind.
This was proposed so as to give the SRCA a season to watch and see what effect EFRA / BRCA rule changes would have, in other words a free year for us to learn from thier potential mistakes. (Bearing in mind we already knew at the AGM that the Japanese were destroying cells every run or 2 using 4 cells and 6 turn mods in touring cars) which was looking like the probable outcome (since 5 cell was not on most peoples radar).
There has as far as I can remember never been a minimum cell limit only a max , however voluntarily reducing the number of cells run in the SRCA will just mean that you will be slow since unless I am very much mistaken the 1500g weight limit remained with the status quo so why go to the bother/expense of having a set of 5 cell packs for mod and 6 cell packs for everything else?
If you want to save your motors and go slower voluntarily spend £4 on a smaller pinion or vote (at the next AGM) for a longer race duration so that gear ratio selection becomes an important part of the equation (as it used to be when we had less than half of the capacity we have now).
Its cell capacity which allows the ever lower ratios and in the main it is the loading caused by overgearing which causes the overheating which burns brushes and comms which adds more heat to melt soldered joints, throw winds and thermal speedos , so it stands to reason if cell capacity becomes an issue again then so does ratio - its at this point where in part at least the 5 cell (lower capacity) argument makes a bit of sense but if slowing cars down is the issue surely good old fashioned ballast does this so I dont get the 1350 g part of the EFRA argument, surely 5 cell 1500 g and longer race duration makes more sense and would mean more conservative ratios therefore less heat/damage/cost.
Incidently the BRCA 5 cell rule only applies in the modified class so am I to assume all this interest means we will be having a better turn out for the mod class this year?

I raced my buggy on sunday with a 9 double in it and desoldered a motor wire & both brushes from the endbell.
I then strapped in an 11 double and did the same to both brushes in the final.
I put it down to the mega voltage from the IB cells. Mine peak off at around 9.5 volts per pack.
No wonder the motors are getting fried.

thanks for that colin.
i couldnt make the agm as i was flying to brum that sunday.
i was just wondering what the rule was this year as i couldnt find the AGM minutes on the srca homepage

also (not relating to any specific event) if people want to run 2 classes they have to carry twice the quantity of cells with them? Some 5 and some 6 cell config??
Who knows where touring car will end up? But saying that there was a time before 6 cell twin deck touring cars (although when I started 18 yrs ago I admit I had 6 cell 1200 stick packs) and now we all accept it as the norm so maybe this is just the initial shock reaction we have and it will feel 'normal' to run 5 cells in 4 yrs time.....or Lipo's (can of worms? ;))
