Hey all.
Have any of you ever been to any of these motoring events that take place up at Crail. I have heard that they do drag strip racing and that also you can enter your own car for a small fee?

I've not been to Crail but I have been to Edzel Drag strip at the air base (run by the Crail mob, and there is talk of it moving there perminantly) and it was a great day! You can run anything for only £15 (I think, well it was when I went anyway)
No TAX or MOT required of course :D

Fantastic :D
I have been challenged by two freinds to a drag race at the moment:
One driving a Ford Escort mk5 - with the same engine as my car (but its heavier)
One driving a Fork Ka :!:
They will so be eating my dust...if we actually go through with this :P

Its just a sprint up a 1/4 mile! How much damage can that do (provided I don't sit in the red!)? No way could I drive this thing round an actual race track anyways!

stuart, i don't know, i think the amount of oilly stuff your car expells you might get black flagged for causing an oil slick!!

In defence of my car, I'll put the anorak back on....
mk2 Ford Orion 1.4 LX - 0 to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds
mk5 Ford Escort 1.4i L (CAT) - 0 to 60 mph in 14 seconds!
Ford Ka 1.3 EFi - 0 to 60 mph in 13.5 seconds
These are the times stated in the brochures! Obviously none of these cars will be capable of these times, especially not mine, but its still faster accelerating none the less! Mine is theoretically (brochures again) also the only car capable of passing the ton (which it will do - see avitar :P )

What oilly stuff? My car doesn't leek oil nor does it burn it! With the new valve stems in the place, and the super healthy piston rings, there is no back pressure!

I won't deny that is my main concern :(

sorry stuart, i had forgotten about your recent fix. i was thinking about that time when i drove enthusiastically alongside you along the motorway home from the club when my dad still had his volvo 850.........there was certainly oilly stuff eminating from your car when your were approaching motorway speeds!!!!

ross i would suggest you modify your post a bit as it would appear to be a confession

and stuart i will need to go into anorack mode here too
look at power to weight ratio
the KA will beat an orion 1400
i would even put money on it the efi skeleton engine is excellent and cant be killed whereas the bottom end an the ford CVH is soft and you will run the risk of running your big ends and cooking your clutch
what i will suggest is a sure fired way to win i will loan you my friends 1600 I ghia then there wouldnt be a contest  you would win hands down
and there would be much rejoycing

Good point Simon - best not to confess those sort of things on the net.

look at power to weight ratio
Anorak on again:
Ford Ka - Kerb weight = 871 Kg (Brochure)
Ford Orion - Kerb Weight = 895 Kg (Haynes Manual)
Ford Ka - 60 bhp
Ford Orion 1.4 - 75 bhp
Thus:
Power/weight ratio Ka - 69 bhp/ton
Power/weight ratio Orion 1.4 - 84 bhp/ton :!:
(for comparison: Power/weight ratio mk2 Mondeo 1.8 - ~90bhp/ton)
Hence faster accelerating times for the Orion for 0-60 and 30-70.
ALSO
1.3 HCS EFi engine maxes out at 5500rpm red line
1.4 CVH engine maxes out at 6500rpm red line!!!
In theory, the orion can reach 60mph in second 8) - a Ka, only about 45-50mph
One conclusion we can draw Si...the Escort will loose regardless of what happens with the Ka and the Orion :D

Bare in mind Si... this is just a single quick drag race to show which car is fastest! Not racing round a track.
If this were a race round a track, the Ka would win hands down, leaving the Escort and Orion MILES behind. It wouldn't be because of the Ka's engine either... It would be the Ka's fantastic grip and handling! Basically the same as a mk4 Fiesta (same chassis).

i have to say stuart you are very wrong you say 5500 red line in the ka not true as yvonnes fiesta has the exact same engine in it and that will do the same as your orion the rev limiter doesnt even kick in until 7200 rpm so therefor your stats are wrong if you want me to prove it i will come with you all to crail and prove it   8)
ford_fanatic

I disagree...yes you could rev it to 7000 rpm, but the red line is 5500rpm for the HCS engine! Escorts which have that engine, which had a rev counter, all had the red line painted at 5500rpm on the tachometer. The only thing Ford have done to that engine since those days of Escort is update the injection system... that won't allow it to rev more without damage! Another little problem with the Ka is the absence of a rev counter in the first place :P . Also the Orion has longer gear ratios which mean it can go further in each gear...and due to the increased power/weight ratio this will not slow its acceleration down significantly enough! The Ka will require more gear changes than the Orion on the 1/4 mile stretch which will blunt the race to high speed!
As for a Fiesta 1.3 Encore/Finesse... 0 to 60mph for that is 14.3 seconds, making it even slower than a Ka!
The Zetec Engine fiesta (1.25 and 1.4) can be revved to 7000rpm (there is no red line on the rev counter  ).

and i wouldnt say know it all just look how old the orion is and how much wear is on it its an old car im sorry look at this from a sencible point of view he says the 1300 efi will struggle to do 100 mph trust me it will do more that 115mph in the correct enviroment of course tech specs are a load of crap trust me

The Zetec Engine fiesta (1.25 and 1.4) can be revved to 7000rpm (there is no red line on the rev counter  ).
Thats interesting :?

...with a gale force wind behind it, down a steep motorway incline :D
Having said that my freind with the Escort managed to get 115mph out of 1.4CVH. Someone else I knew, once told me they managed to get 125mph (after a long period mind of accelerating along a stright empty motorway) from the a later 1.4 CVH engined Escort (the one with the EFi). Personally I don't believe this person though :P
Hey don't get me wrong Si... my Orion is coming up on 116k miles, I know its old! Put the drag race aside. I still reckon that if you had the Orion, the Escort and Ka all driving along side by side at 20mph say, in 2nd gear, and then everyopne just rammed their foot down to the floor at the same time, the Orion would accelerate away faster.

just something to keep in mind when talking about top speeds and things, car speedometers are generally, especially in older cars, pretty inaccurate devices. so whatever your speedo says, especially when you get towards the higher speeds should be viewed with only as a "guide'" as to your actual speed.
ford_fanatic
18th May 2005, 04:33 PM
i.e. you could be going faster than what it says Ross 8)
I have an old What Car? magazine here from 1990. They have a small bit here at the end of a test envolving the Citroen BX  , Ford Sierra 8) , Nissan Primera, and Vauxhall Cavalier :) , that says what speed the speedometer is reading when the car is doing 70mph. The Sierra, Primera and Cavalier are apparently doing 76mph when their speedo reads 70mph. The Citroen (i.e. piece of crap) is doing 74mph.
In other words, the like of my Orion, when doing 100, could potentially be doing say 105/6 mph. My freind who got 115mph out the 1.4 CVH Escort, may have been close to 120mph :!: (or maybe not :P )

remember the same can work in reverse you could be going slower than it says

I have to agree, my speedo over reads by about 5mph at 30mph!
